Most homeowners think about their lawn at grass level. We water it, feed it, and mow it, and when it still looks thin or tired, we reach for more fertilizer. But what most people don't hear is that grass can only be as healthy as the soil it grows in.
If your soil is compacted, lifeless, or out of balance, your grass struggles no matter how much you feed it. Fix the soil, and everything else gets easier. That's the idea behind our Soil Amendment Program, and in this post we'll walk you through how it works in plain English.

Healthy soil comes down to three things working together.
Biology - Good soil is alive. It's full of microbes and beneficial fungi that break down organic matter and deliver nutrients to grass roots. Think of them as a delivery crew working around the clock underground.
Structure - Roots need room to breathe and grow. When soil is packed tight (common with heavy clay, foot traffic, and New England winters), water runs off instead of soaking in and roots stay shallow.
Chemistry - Soil pH controls whether your grass can actually use the nutrients already in the ground. If pH is off, nutrients get "stuck," and your lawn goes hungry even when they're right there.
When one of these is out of balance, your lawn tells you in a number of ways: thinning, bare spots, more weed growth, or grass that yellows no matter what you do.
Rather than just feeding the grass, our program feeds the soil. Here's the role each product plays.
Organic Matter Booster is a granular blend of roughly half compost and half biochar. In simple terms, it adds stable organic matter that holds water and nutrients, helps feed roots, and loosens soil structure so air, water, and roots can move freely.
Gypsum is a natural mineral that helps break up tight, compacted clay and improve airflow in the soil. It also adds calcium without changing your soil's pH, and it helps flush out excess salts.
That last part matters more than you might think. If your lawn borders a driveway, sidewalk, or street, winter road salt can build up and damage the grass along the edges. Gypsum helps neutralize that damage.
This breaks apart in water and soaks into the soil with rain or irrigation. Its job is efficiency. It helps grass take up micronutrients and makes every nutrient in your soil work harder, while also feeding the soil's microbial life.
The result: your lawn gets more out of less.
Many soils in our area tend to be more acidic, and acidic soil is one of the most common reasons nutrients get locked up. Calcitic lime gently raises low soil pH so those nutrients become available again. It also supplies calcium for stronger grass and denser turf.
No single product does the whole job. The magic is in the combination of biology, structure, and chemistry working together.
Every lawn is different, so we don't use a one-size-fits-all approach. Amendments are matched to your soil test results and worked in through the season, so they reach the root zone where they matter.
Each year of amendments stack up and build steadily improving your soil so it needs fewer corrective inputs over time. That's the real goal: a thicker, healthier lawn that relies less on constant treatment.
Not sure if soil is the problem? Watch for these clues:
If any of these sound familiar, your lawn may be telling you it's time to look below the surface.
A thick, healthy lawn starts with the soil. Velvet Green's organic-based Soil Amendment Program is designed to rebuild your soil from the ground up, so your lawn can thrive season after season. This all starts with a soil test to see where your baseline is and what steps are needed to start improving it. Let's find out what your soil needs.
