For many years, professional golf course greens keepers have known that the secret to a beautiful, dense turf is to aerate their course two or three times each year to allow the healthy grass roots to thrive. Aeration removes cores of soil from the lawn to allow for improved exchange of gasses between the soil and the atmosphere, improved water filtration, improved rooting, decreased soil density, and a site for seed germination. Aeration is performed during the fall months of the year after the heat and humidity of summer have broken.
When overseeding, we use our Velvet Green Resilient Turf Mix. This proprietary grass seed mixture contains grass varieties that are lateral spreading and salt-, heat-, and drought-tolerant. This combination of grass seed will help lawns remain resilient through some of the harshest summer conditions in the future. Introducing new, improved cultivars of turfgrasses helps keep the lawn thick and healthy.
Adding a thin layer of compost over the seed bed after aeration and seeding have been performed is like buying insurance on the work. It gives a light covering to the seed which protects it from wind and birds. It also insulates the seed and allows it to stay more moist from irrigation. I was referred to Velvet Green after I had my lot excavated, re-graded and a new lawn installed in the Fall of 2022. After speaking with Michael in the Spring of 2023, there was no hesitation on my part to sign up for their services. Velvet green being all organic was a huge factor for me. Mostly, though it was because Michael was so informative, knowledgeable about what my lawn needed to get established and happily explained the detailed plan for how we would go about doing so. They began with a soil test and then went on to do the treatments in the Spring of 2023. At that point, the lawn was struggling, a lot of bare spots and I was so disappointed with the installation of the lawn (not done by Velvet Green). Michael assured me that Velvet Green would be able to transform my lawn into something we both would be proud of. He also explained that it takes a few years to establish a new lawn. Well, it has been only 5 months, and the lawn looks AMAZING. All the bare spots have filled in, it is lush and green. So much so that you want to go out and lay on it! I would also like to point out the excellent customer service Michael and the team provides - every call is returned in a timely fashion and when treatments do not coordinate with my lawn cutting schedule Velvet Green does their best to accommodate where and when they can. When I am out watering (a part time job as I don't have irrigation yet) my neighbors stop and admire the lawn along with me. I am so happy I found Velvet Green and can only imagine, with their guidance and services, what the lawn will look like in 2024! Thank you Velvet Green!
James and his team aerated and overseeded my lawn. They were very efficient and did a great job of covering the entire area and didn’t scrimp on the seed which I appreciate. He was also very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. This application was a good value for the money.
